Home Décor for the Kitchen and Dining Room

Hello there friends,

How’s your week going so far?

I’m continuing us on the tour of our previous home. Last time I showed you our entryway and the living room! Today I’ll move us through the formal dining room, kitchen, and breakfast area. In a later post, I’ll share bits and pieces of the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Once our new home is fully renovated and picture ready, I’ll share details about it as well. So for now let’s take a look at the past for a home tour!

Welcome back to our (previous) home! If you missed the first part of the tour then click here. =)

FORMAL DINING ROOM

When you walked into our entryway and turned left, you’d be presented with our formal dining room. The walls had a light goldish grass cloth wallpaper that had the slightest hint of shimmer with a soft blue painted trim in between. I never did find the paint color information in our records, but it was beautiful and we were happy with the builder’s choice for the walls and the lighting.

  • I had custom shutters made for every front facing room in the house, including the formal dining room. This allowed us a bit of privacy at night but ample day light during the day.

  • I added extra wide ivory velvet curtain panels with the intentions of never closing them. The panels from Half Priced Drapes were exceptional quality and affordable. I wanted a light color that complimented the goldish tone to the wallpaper but not stark white. I highly recommend this brand! *Note - I learned the hard way that quality, blackout curtains, and extra wide are key words that mean extra heavy and thus you will need a thicker curtain rod to appropriately handle the weight.

The house was staged when we viewed it and we liked the round table style so we found a Bassett Mirror Co. 70” round glass top table with a smoked glass pedestal on Houzz. I would have thought I’d have learned my lessen with glass top tables from our home before but alas, it looked good in that space so I acquiesced to the idea. It was beautiful, sturdy, and heavy! The glass piece just sits on top but given it’s weight it never moved. I just found the table on Amazon for a lot less!

We paired grey velvet chairs with the table for an elevated, yet comfortable look. We didn’t want the room to feel too formal for the overall house’s feel and since this house was designed to mirror an English carriage house we needed to allow a little casual ambiance mixed in with whichever style we chose. We had many compliments on these chairs between the style and the comfort. I originally found them on Wayfair but have since found them at High Fashion Home, Amazon, Overstock, and other sites. The chairs come in five other colors.

We also decided to go with a sunburst mirror for the wall similar to how it was staged and while it isn’t my usual preference I did like that it got me out of my so-called “safe box”. The frame is made of painted wood and it was heavy and packaged well! It’s currently out of stock but you can sign up to be notified when it’s back in stock if you like it, or of course search for similar options.

BUTLER’S PANTRY

There isn’t a whole lot to share here except for what’s inside the pantry cabinets. Our cabinets went to the ceiling which was nice aesthetically but impractical. On a step stool I couldn’t have come close to using the top section of cabinets. However, our cabinets were very deep. As in so deep I could barely reach the back of them! So I ordered a bunch of these pantry baskets in the respective shapes/sizes and stored taller items in the back and shorter items in the front. It worked perfectly for our set up and they looked nice when someone opened the pantry.

KITCHEN

Entering into the kitchen from either the butler’s pantry or the living room definitely felt welcoming. When we hosted any type of gathering, everyone congregates around the large island. I really liked that the appliances had rose gold handles. The backsplash was a soft mint-green-ish color that complimented the color of the island cabinetry. The rest of the cabinetry was painted Sherwin Williams “snowbound” so it was in the white cabinet family without being super duper white. The lighting had gold and brass finishes.

We opted for neutral counter height stools in a light gray that could flow between the gray countertop and our neutral sofas. We really liked these stools because it had a small back to it but it didn’t block the view to the counter, the seats were big and wide, and they were sturdy. These also come in a white fabric, as well as in bar height.

BREAKFAST AREA

Moving into the breakfast area we found ourselves with ample room for a 6 foot table in front of the large windows looking into our (tiny) backyard. I found this beautiful, real marble table called “Concert Dining Table” by Kelly Clarkson that was the perfect fit for our space in both size and shape. We spent every morning at that table drinking coffee and plenty of evenings gathered around it for dinners. It really saddened me that it did not fit in our new home and we had to sell it. It was too big for the new breakfast area and too small for the formal dining area.

We paired the table with the Lunden chairs in Nomad Linen from Arhaus. They’re basic in design and neutral in color so they worked perfectly there and are now in our new home as well.

Our breakfast room rug and kitchen runner are low pile so they laid flat without creases and were easy to vacuum. The color tied in perfectly with the kitchen colors.

I loved the natural lighting coming in and did not want to block any of it so we mirrored the drapes we used in the living room on curtain rods intentionally shorter as we would never actually open or close the drapes. We had super tall ceilings so I purchased extra long black out drapes in a heavy cotton in polo navy. I planned to use a velvet in the formal dining room so I wanted these to be a hint more casual. We never intended to open or close these two panels so I purchased an appropriate sized curtain rod with acrylic diamond finials for that as well.

I hope you enjoyed the second part of our (previous) home tour! I was really pleased how it all came together and fit our needs and taste. Decorating is such a personal experience that showcases your own style and touch. I would never claim that I have a “sense of style” in any which way, but I am proud of the things I choose to make our home feel like OUR home. That’s what makes you want to live and return to the space. Next time as we continue the tour, I’ll show you our guest rooms.

What home décor styles are you into? Do you feel like your home décor tastes shift depending on the house’s style as well? I’d love to read your thoughts! Please comment below!
