It’s February, folks! Can you believe it? In just 13 more days we’ll be at our first holiday of the year, Valentine’s Day. I thought I’d share some ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day at home.

Seems simple enough as many of us do that anyway, but given Covid-19 rates are still very high I also know that more of us will be celebrating at home than ever before.

So how can we make it FUN and ROMANTIC?

1) Decorate with hearts and flowers. This is definitely cliché and a given, but some people really enjoy sweet vibe it provides. If you’re decorating on a budget then head to the dollar store, Walmart, and the Target dollar spot. There’s always great items there that are not expensive. Psst - the longer you wait the more likely the Valentine’s stuff will be picked over and switched over to St. Patrick’s Day or Easter so hurry.

2) Balloons. Have you ever seen the scene in the Sex and the City movie where Carrie and Miranda have dinner at a restaurant on Valentine’s Day? That is a dream scene for me. (Not their discussion or the way it ends 😢, but the abundance of balloons in the restaurant.) You can buy a small helium tank at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or Party City and easily make it festive with a bunch of pink, red, and/or white balloons.

3) Turn off the lights! Low lighting is always more intimate. Buy tea lights or light the candles you have. Turn on those white Christmas lights you have tucked away or buy some fairy lights. Remember that metals and mirrors reflect the flicker of candle light so if you place them near any or inside mercury, gold, or silver votives you get double the effect.

4) Set up a designated date spot such as a picnic on the floor in front of the fireplace or in the backyard (weather permitting). Eat picnic foods like cheese, crackers, dips, and chicken salad. Make the meal feel different than a regular dinner at home. You can play games or watch a romantic movie.

5) Light a candle lit walkway to the hot tub and have it warmed up and ready to go with a bucket of ice and champagne (or your favorite adult beverage). Don’t have a hot tub?? Fill up the bathtub. It’s awkward and fun to squeeze into it anyway.

6) Set up a scavenger hunt trip! What better way to remember some of the fun places you’ve traveled together when our travel is limited. You can set up spots around the house to represent different places and each place has a clue to help him/her guess the next spot. Each spot can have something to eat that reflects the place you’ve been together with photos and spend a little time there to reminisce before giving the next clue.

7) Need a romantic but easy dinner that usually costs hundreds of dollars if you were to go to a restaurant? Bacon wrapped filet mignon (in the oven), baked potatoes, and buy a dessert or check out these desserts. ;) Don’t forget to light those candles.

8) Set up a mock restaurant atmosphere with either white linens (you can even use a white sheet as a table cloth) or even a mock Lady and the Tramp table. =} It doesn’t matter what you make, really, it’s just setting the table to make it pretty and special. Hint* lots of candles, low lighting, and potentially a floral centerpiece.

9) Make it personal. Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday and truly these gestures should be year round. But, it doesn’t hurt to make this evening special and personalized. Your significant other (man or woman) will appreciate a personal note, letter, poem, or handmade gift way more than they would some last minute box of candy or general Valentine’s Day gift from the gift aisle. I promise. So bake the cake. Glue together the card. Write the poem. It’s ok if it’s cheesy or less than professional quality. It is the thought and the memory that is sentimental.

10) Celebrate in the morning! You can make breakfast and shape the eggs or pancakes into hearts, make heart shaped donuts, or add some whipped cream to the cup of coffee with some heart sprinkles. Since Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year you may want to have a brunch instead of dinner.

11) Have lots of wine. Ok, I kid. That’s mainly for the hubs who probably won’t read this far down so this is a test for him. ;) But, in all seriousness it’s better to have more of everything than to run out.
